Today I took James to his first birthday party. It was for his little friend Samuel from church who just turned one. My friend who is obviously angling for the "mom of the year" award did the whole party in a "Cars" theme, complete with a game (the little ones put cars stickers on a plastic picture of a race track hanging on the wall), decorations (stop, yield and other driving related signs), a cake that looked like a Goodyear tire and little "stop light" snacks made of graham crackers and red, green and yellow M&M's. It was all very impressive. She even sent the 5 kids home with little goodie bags with matchbox cars and some gummy cars snacks. Whew!
There were a couple funny moments...James is in his little high chair seat thingy happily munching away on his homemade brocolli cheddar bites and peas. All the other little kids and parents and munching on cheese pizza. I started to feel kind of bad, like James was missing out so I got him a little bite of my pizza. He put it in his mouth, made a face and spit it out. Then grabbed for more peas. I had to chuckle! Most of the parents couldn't believe he would choose peas over pizza.
Later I was looking around for him in the crowd of kids and parents and he had walked over to the corner of the room and found some little kid's plate of cake that was about gone. There was a plastic fork sitting with it. By the time I found him he had speared some crumbs and was trying to put the fork in his mouth. Too cute!
He really enjoyed being with the other kids and wasn't scared of all the people and being in a strange place. I was so proud of my little guy!
I forgot my camera (of course!) so my friend promises to email me some pics which I will promptly post to commemorate the occasion. I'm sure this is just the first of many birthday parties that he will attend. I just can't believe he's growing up so fast!
So James and I were taking a nice walk this morning in the crisp cool 60 something degree weather (finally!!)
and I've noticed that many houses in my neighborhood are decorated for Halloween. There are the trashbag ghosts hanging from trees, graveyard signs in the front yard, the big huge blow up witches and pumpkins, you name it....Someone even has a headless "person" stuffed with hay sitting on a hay bale in the front yard.
My question is this...do these folks have too much time on their hands? Or is this a growing trend across the US? I've always enjoyed driving around at Christmas looking at lights and decor but I never really thought about hopping in the car to go see all the witches and ghosts mixed with pumpkins....Hmm...
Let me know if you enjoy decorating for Halloween and/or what you think of it.
Personally, I've never even put up Christmas lights yet just because of the sheer amount of work that it takes. I'm really trying to perfect my indoor Christmas decorations first. I'm sure as James gets older we'll inevitably get talked in to hanging lights etc. Every time I think of Christmas lights though I remember that Chevy Chase movie - National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation....ouch!
